Pressure mounts on Moscow as EU proposes tariffs on Russian oil

The European Commission is working on a new proposal to impose tariffs on Russian oil that still enters the single market via Hungary and Slovakia, amid growing pressure to cut all energy ties with Moscow permanently.

The additional tariffs are intended to increase the costs of materials for both countries and, therefore, stimulate the urgency to find alternative suppliers.

"We will present in due course what we have in mind with this," Olof Gill, the Commission's deputy spokesman, said on Wednesday. 

The representative noted that the initiative will be separate from the 19th sanctions package that is currently on the table.

The EU imposed a full ban on Russian crude and refined petroleum products in 2022 as part of its broad sanctions regime in response to the full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The ban was hailed as a major step in ending the bloc's historic dependence on Moscow./CNA
