Debate in Italy/ Meloni: We will recognize Palestine if Hamas releases hostages,

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, announced that the majority will present a motion demanding recognition of Palestine, but on the condition of the release of hostages and the expulsion of Hamas from Gaza.

"Personally, I continue to believe that recognizing Palestine in the absence of a state that meets the requirements of sovereignty does not solve the problem, does not produce tangible and concrete results for the Palestinians. Then they say that recognizing Palestine can be an effective tool for political pressure, and that's fine, I understand, but we also need to understand who is being pressured. I think the main political pressure should be exerted on Hamas because it is Hamas that started this war, and it is Hamas that is preventing the end of the war by refusing to hand over the hostages. "

" The majority will present a motion in the hall to declare that the recognition of Palestine must be subject to two conditions: the release of the hostages and, of course, the exclusion of Hamas from any governmental dynamics within Palestine, because we need to understand what the priorities are. I am not against the recognition of Palestine, but we need to set the right priorities ," said Meloni, seeking the support of the opposition.

"I think an initiative like this could find support even among the opposition. Of course it won't find support among Hamas, and probably not among Islamist extremists, but it should find support among people of sound mind," Meloni said.

The leader of the Five Star Movement, Giuseppe Conte, declared himself against it and said that the Palestinian state should be recognized unconditionally and Italy should join 150 other countries.

" The conditional recognition of the State of Palestine, Meloni's latest 'invention', is a pathetic tool that confirms the cowardice of our government. Recognizing a state is a formal act, which in this case has a high symbolic as well as political value. Either it does it or it doesn't. Why can't Italy join the 150 or so other countries that have already recognized the State of Palestine? The hypocrisy of our government, which continues to stand by Netanyahu, is shameful. If Italy does not hurry, the conditions for recognition will no longer exist: simply because the Palestinian population will no longer exist."

Elly Schlein stated:

"Giorgia Meloni is beginning to realize that she is losing her reputation in the eyes of the world and of our public opinion on Palestine. But this is not the time for trickery and mockery. Will she recognize the State of Palestine, as over 150 countries have done, including now France and San Marino, or will she not recognize it?" declared the secretary of the Democratic Party. Enough with the propaganda. Recognizing Palestine means recognizing the Palestinian National Authority, certainly not the Hamas terrorists, who cannot be the future of Gaza. Or do you think that France, Spain and the United Kingdom have done the opposite? We demand the immediate recognition of Palestine, as other countries have done."
