Trump sharply criticizes European countries for buying Russian energy

US President Donald Trump sharply criticized European countries for continuing to buy Russian oil and gas, declaring that he will not take action to implement new sanctions on Moscow over the war in Ukraine until they stop their purchases.

“It’s embarrassing for them, and it was very embarrassing for them when I found out about it,” Trump said. “They should immediately stop all energy purchases from Russia. Otherwise, we’re all wasting a lot of time.”

European countries have significantly reduced their oil purchases from Russia since the invasion of Ukraine, but continue to buy natural gas. Two countries, Hungary and Slovakia, account for the bulk of European purchases of Russian oil.

Trump identified China and India as "the main financiers of the ongoing war by continuing to buy Russian oil," but also accused European countries of contributing.

Trump said the US was "fully prepared to impose a very strong round of powerful tariffs" on Russia if it does not agree to a peace deal, but said European countries "will have to join us in adopting the same measures."

Trump sarcastically admitted that European leaders would be "thrilled" to hear his public rebuke, "but that's the way it is."

Previously, Trump said he thought the war in Ukraine would have been easier to resolve "because of my relationship with President Putin, which has always been good."

More information: The US has imported $755 million worth of Russian uranium and plutonium so far this year, up from $624 million last year during the Biden administration.

Asked about this, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum told CNN aboard Air Force One on Sunday: "The purchase of uranium from Russia by Americans is not acceptable. And so we are working very hard ... to make sure that we have a plan so that the United States can return to domestic production of enriched uranium as quickly as possible."/ CNA
