Sweden calls for "war preparedness" in Europe

Swedish Defense Minister Pál Jonsson on Tuesday called for Europe to increase preparations for an armed conflict, due to the threat posed by Russia.

"We need to adopt a new European mentality, to move from a peacetime mentality to a wartime readiness," Johnson said in Berlin, ahead of a meeting with his German counterpart, Boris Pistorius, DPA reports.

Russia is arming itself massively and building a "more lethal" army, making major advances in long-range weapons and electronic warfare, Johnson said at an event at the Konrad Adenauer Foundation.

He warned that North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) countries should coordinate more closely on defense.

"We're talking about a diversity within the alliance in terms of defense investment," Johnson said. "That's not a good thing. I don't want to see fragmentation in defense investment."

After neutrality during the Cold War, Sweden joined NATO last year in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

"We see Ukraine as a shield – or a sword, if you will – against Russian military expansion," he said.

"But now, we are also seeing that the burden of financial support for Ukraine is being borne by fewer and fewer allies within NATO."

Johnson also called for stronger bilateral defense cooperation with Germany, arguing that both governments should promote standardization and long-term contracts.

According to him, Berlin and Stockholm are following a similar path for defense strategy.

Both countries are investing record amounts in defense, after a long period of low investment, while facing the same challenges from the war in Ukraine and the Russian threat in the Baltic Sea region. /REL
