One arrest in the UK for cyberattacks

British authorities have arrested a man in his 40s in connection with a series of cyberattacks that disrupted flights at major European airports. Such attacks against transport hubs are on the rise.

The United Kingdom's National Crime Agency (NCA) said on Wednesday that a suspect had been arrested in connection with recent cyberattacks that disrupted air traffic at several major European airports. The suspect, aged around 40, was arrested in southern England late Tuesday.

"While this arrest is a positive step, the investigation into this incident is in its early stages and is ongoing," said a statement from NCA Deputy Director Paul Foster.

"Cybercrime is an ongoing global threat that continues to cause significant disruption in the UK," he added.

Which airports were affected?

The arrest comes after days of disruptions at airports, including London Heathrow, as well as major airports in Dublin, Brussels and Berlin, due to ransomware attacks by third parties. Cyberattack causes chaos at European airports

Software belonging to Collins Aerospace, a subsidiary of US defense giant Raytheon, was affected by the attack. The company said it was investigating the incident.

The software error forced airport staff to perform check-ins and baggage handling manually, significantly slowing down operations and leading to numerous delays and cancellations.

In recent years, there has been a significant increase in cyberattacks on airports, which rely on extensive interconnected systems to maintain smooth operations./ DW
