EU considers imposing tariffs on Russian oil

The European Commission said it is working to potentially impose tariffs on Russian oil imports, in light of pressure from US President Donald Trump.

Trump has demanded that Europe stop energy imports from Moscow before agreeing to impose sanctions on Moscow over the war in Ukraine.

The European Union has already cut its oil imports from Russia by about 90 percent since Moscow began its invasion of Ukraine in 2022, and has announced plans to completely eliminate Russian imports by 2027.

EU countries Hungary and Slovakia still import Russian oil through pipelines, and these two countries oppose plans to quickly phase out Russian energy.

EC chief Ursula von der Leyen told the US leader during a meeting with Trump on Tuesday that Brussels wants to impose tariffs on oil supplies still coming into the EU.

"We will, in due course, present what we have in mind on this issue," said EU spokesman Olof Gill.

Any attempt to impose tariffs on remaining Russian oil imports into the EU would only require the support of a qualified majority of member states.

This means that Hungary and Slovakia would most likely not be able to block any such initiative./ REL
