Hundreds of people are evacuated from the Kharkiv region after the Russian

Hundreds of people have been evacuated from areas near the Russian border in Ukraine's Kharkiv region, a day after Moscow launched a surprise ground offensive, officials said.

Russian forces made little progress in the region, nearly two years after being pushed back.

"In general, 1,775 people have been evacuated," said Kharkiv regional governor Oleg Synegubov.

He said that Russia bombed over 30 settlements in the last 24 hours.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said a "fierce battle" was taking place in Kharkiv.

"We seem to definitely stop Russian offensives and Ukraine should take the initiative," Zelensky said on Saturday.

The Kharkiv region has been largely under Ukrainian control since September 2022.

The northeastern Ukrainian region of Kharkiv is located on the border with Russia, and on the outskirts is the regional capital of the same name. This city is located 25 kilometers from the front lines.

With a population of 1.4 million – according to pre-war population data – Kharkiv is Ukraine's second largest city and one of the most important economic and industrial cities.

It was among the first cities to face Russian attacks after Moscow launched its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

The successful Ukrainian counteroffensive in September 2022 led to the liberation of almost the entire Kharkiv region.

But in recent months, Russia has intensified drone and missile attacks in this region and its capital, while Ukrainian forces are facing a shortage of ammunition and air defense systems./ REL
