Six months from the elections for the White House

While six months remain from the American presidential elections, Democratic President Joe Biden and Republican candidate Donald Trump are running campaigns to win public support. VOA correspondent Scott Stearsn takes a look at the two candidates' campaign plans as the November election for the White House approaches.

President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump have six months to win the support of American voters for a second term.

But Mr. Trump will spend some of that time in state or federal courts as he faces four indictments, including illegally keeping classified documents and falsifying business records. He says that the prosecutors are interfering in the elections.

"My actions were legal. This is being done for political reasons. They want Biden elected. That's the only reason," says Mr. Trump.

The court hearings are limiting Mr. Trump's time to campaign, but he says what he calls "political persecution" is making him more popular with voters.

"It is terrible what is happening in our country. I hope that November 5th, the most important day in the history of our country in my opinion, which is called election day, I hope it brings change because these people are destroying our country," Mr. Trump said.

Mr. Trump last received the Republican Party's nomination for president at the 2020 convention in North Carolina. This year the Republican convention takes place in Wisconsin. Mr. Trump has not yet chosen a candidate for the post of vice president.

Among those believed to be in the running for the post are Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida, Sen. JD Vance of Ohio, Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina and Rep. Elise Stefanik of New York.

As president, Mr. Biden has the advantage of meetings at the White House to attract the attention of voters. Mr. Biden is ramping up his attacks on opponent Trump at rallies as he touts a strong economy.

"The construction of new factories has doubled during our administration. Meanwhile, Donald Trump still thinks windmills cause cancer. That's what he said. Do you remember during covid when he said 'inject chlorine' into your veins. He lost his hand and the chlorine went to his hair," Mr. Biden said.

The Democratic Party last nominated Mr. Biden for president at the 2020 convention in Wisconsin. This year, the Democratic convention will be held in August in Illinois. Mr. Biden is running again with Vice President Kamala Harris.

She has campaigned to reinstate a federal law protecting abortion struck down by the Supreme Court in 2022.

"Donald Trump was the president who removed federal protections for abortion. "Joe Biden will be the president who will bring back protections for abortion," said Ms. Harris.

Candidates Biden and Trump are expected to debate before the November elections. They say they are ready for a debate, but no date has been set./ VOA
