The planned increase in military aid is a "strong signal to Ukraine that we will not abandon this country," German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said in a statement to German television ARD. Pistorius indirectly confirmed the reports of ARD and the newspaper "Bild am Sonntag", according to which Germany's support for Ukraine will increase from four to eight billion euros in 2024.

"We don't want to be in a situation next year where we have to ask for more money, when it's known that it really matters," Pistorius said. That's why the increase is an "important signal" — "especially now, when Ukraine must continue its struggle while some of the world's public attention is directed more towards Israel."

For "increased aid" for Ukraine should be decided at the meeting of the Committee on the budget in the Bundestag that begins on Thursday of this week, reported an insider. The government coalition consisting of the SPD, the FDP and the Greens has agreed to this in principle. "Additional aid" is not financed from the defense budget, but goes through the so-called Individual Plan 60 to the federal budget, which contains projects whose expenses are not taken by any specific ministry.

With the additional spending on Ukraine, Germany would also meet the two percent target that NATO members must share for defense purposes. Germany's defense spending would thus reach 2.1 percent of gross domestic product. In recent years, the Federal Republic of Germany has always been below this norm, which has been one of the reasons for criticism from several partner countries, primarily from the USA./ DW
