Five members of the US military were killed when a military helicopter crashed in the eastern Mediterranean Sea during a training mission, US officials said on Sunday.
The US command said all five crew members died when their helicopter crashed "during a routine in-flight refueling mission as part of military training".
The military made the first announcement about the accident on Saturday, saying that the cause was being investigated and that there was no indication of any action by the opposing parties. The command announced on Sunday that “search and rescue efforts began immediately, engaging nearby military ships and aircraft.
Through a statement, US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin expressed his condolences "for the tragic loss of five US servicemen during a training accident in the Mediterranean Sea early Saturday morning".
The US Air Force has sent additional squadrons to the region and the USS Gerald R. Ford aircraft carrier, which has a number of aircraft on board, has also operated in the eastern Mediterranean./ VOA
