"Critical circumstances"/ WHO: Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza is no longer functional

The World Health Organization has been able to contact health care workers at Gaza's Al Shifa hospital, where thousands of Palestinians, including the seriously injured, have taken shelter as the Israeli army surrounds the hospital.

In a statement on Sunday, WHO chief Tedros Ghebreyesus called the situation "horrific and dangerous".

"It has been 3 days without electricity, without water and with very poor internet, which has severely affected our ability to provide essential care. The continuous shooting and shelling in the area have worsened the already critical situation.

Unfortunately, the number of patient casualties has increased significantly. Unfortunately, the hospital no longer functions as a hospital. The world cannot remain silent while hospitals, which should be safe havens, turn into scenes of death, destruction and despair," he added.

The WHO joins calls from other humanitarian groups, including Doctors Without Borders, to stop attacks on health care facilities and for an immediate ceasefire./ CNA
