Thousands of Spaniards protest against the plan to amnesty the Catalan

Tens of thousands of people protested across Spain's cities on Sunday against plans by acting Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez to grant amnesty to Catalan separatists in exchange for their support for a new term in government.

On Thursday, the government reached an agreement with the Catalan separatist Junts party, which also includes the adoption of a controversial law to amnesty those convicted of Catalonia's attempt to secede from Spain in 2017.

The deal shocked the country, and the conservative Sanchez was accused by opponents of endangering law and order for his own political gain.

"We will not stop until new elections are held," said the leader of the People's Party (PP), Alberto Nunez Feijoo, speaking to a large crowd in Madrid's Puerta del Sol square.

Authorities said around 80,000 people protested in Madrid, while the PP, which called protests across Spanish cities, said around a million protested on Sunday.

Many protesters carried Spanish and European Union flags, as well as slogans reading "respect the Constitution".

In Barcelona, ??local police said 6,000 people protested, while in Granada 30,000 and in Seville 50,000, according to authorities. Protests were also held in other cities, such as Malaga, Palma and Valencia.

After the July 23 election, the Socialists negotiated for several weeks with smaller parties, including the far-right Sumar and the Basque, Catalan and Galician nationalist parties.

Confirmed support from the Junts, as well as from the Basque Nationalist Party, would give Sanchez an overwhelming majority in the Congress of Deputies, where his coalition is expected to be voted on in the coming days./ REL
