Ukrainian parliament approves new law on military mobilization

Ukraine's parliament has passed a law on military mobilization that will increase the number of troops, two lawmakers said, as the country grapples with the problem of filling the ranks as the invasion that Russia launched more than two years ago continues.

On April 11, 283 lawmakers in the 450-member Parliament voted for military mobilization, said lawmakers Yaroslav Zheleznyak and Oleksiy Honcharenko.

A clause on the demobilization of those currently serving in the armed forces has been removed from the law, and the move is expected to cause outrage among Ukrainian troops and their families. The removal of the demobilization article from the law was supported by 227 legislators.

The mobilization bill was approved in the first reading on February 7.

On April 2, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a law lowering the age of conscription from 27 to 25.

Ukraine has been at war since February 24, 2022, the day Russia launched its unprovoked, full-scale invasion of the neighboring country.

The former commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian army, Valeriy Zaluzhniy, stated in February that Ukraine needs 500,000 new recruits to strengthen its ranks./ CNA
