It was the most spectacular trial ever held in Vietnam, for one of the biggest bank frauds the world has ever seen.

A 67-year-old Vietnamese construction worker was sentenced to death on Thursday for robbing one of the country's largest banks over an 11-year period.

It is a rare decision, she is one of the few women in Vietnam to be sentenced to death for such a crime.

The decision is a reflection of the staggering scale of the fraud.

Truong My Lan was convicted of taking $44bn (£35bn) in loans from the Saigon Commercial Bank.

The ruling requires her to pay back $27 billion, an amount prosecutors said she may never get back.

Some believe the death penalty is the court's way of encouraging him to return some of the lost billions.

According to the media, 2,700 people have been called to testify, while 10 prosecutors and about 200 lawyers have dealt with the case.

The evidence was in 104 boxes weighing a total of six tons. Eighty-five defendants were tried with Truong My Lan, who denied the charges./ CNA
