The UN warns that 6 million Afghans are at risk of starvation

The United Nations' humanitarian aid chief called on donors to resume funding for Afghanistan, warning that 6 million Afghans are at risk of starvation.

According to Martin Griffiths, more than half of the Afghan population of 39 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance.

"Poverty is deepening, the population is still growing and the de facto authorities have no budget to invest in their future. It is clear to us that some development support needs to be restored," Griffiths said during the UN Security Council on August 29.

"The de facto authorities of Afghanistan must do their part. Bureaucratic interference and procedures slow down humanitarian aid, which is needed. Humanitarian aid workers... should be allowed to work unhindered. And girls should be allowed to continue their education," Griffiths said.

Despite the challenges, he said UN agencies and partner organizations have had "an unprecedented response" over the past year, helping almost 23 million people.

The UN official said $614 million is urgently needed to prepare for winter, including repairing shelters and providing warm clothes and blankets. According to Griffiths, an additional $154 million is needed for food and other supplies before bad weather makes access to certain areas impossible./REL
