The United States supports the agreement between Kosovo and Serbia on identification documents, a State Department spokesman told VOA Serbia on Monday. According to him, the United States "sees the agreement as an important step towards the normalization of relations, based on mutual recognition".

Marrëveshja e arritur të shtunën pasoi një periudhë përpjekjesh diplomatike amerikane dhe evropiane për të shmangur tensionet në terren që shpërthyen më 31 korrik pas reagimeve serbe ndaj vendimit të qeverisë në Prishtinë që dokumentet e identifikimit dhe targat e makinave të lëshuara nga Serbia, të mos vlejnë në territorin e Kosovës, një veprim që zbatohej nga Beogradi për qytetarët e Kosovës që udhëtonin nëpër Serbi në dhjetë vitet e fundit.

“Arritja e zgjidhjes përmes dialogut është kritike për të dyja vendet në rrugën e tyre drejt integrimit evropian”, thuhet në përgjigjen e zëdhënësit të Departamentit të Shtetit për Zërin e Amerikës.

The head of the European Union's foreign policy, Josep Borrell, said on Saturday that "Serbia had agreed to abolish entry/exit documents for holders of Kosovo identification documents and Kosovo agreed not to apply them to citizens from Serbia."

The State Department spokesperson said that "Based on the commitments of both sides and the hard work of the European Union Special Representative , we encourage Serbia and Kosovo to take an active role and move forward peacefully."

American and European officials hope that Kosovo and Serbia will have a constructive approach to finding a solution to the issue of car license plates./voa
