Russian missiles and artillery struck areas across the Dnieper River near Europe's largest nuclear power plant, Ukrainian officials said Sunday. The developments come as fears have grown that fighting near the plant could damage it, causing a radioactive leak.
Russian forces took control of the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant shortly after the start of the war and also have control of adjacent territory along the left bank of the Dnieper River. Ukraine controls its right flank, including the towns of Nikopol and Marhanets, each about 10 kilometers from the plant.
Russian forces took control of the nuclear plant at the beginning of the war, but its operation is controlled by Ukrainian personnel. Kiev and Moscow have repeatedly accused each other of bombing the plant and surrounding areas, raising fears of a potential catastrophe.
The UN Atomic Energy Agency is preparing to send a team to inspect and help ensure the safety of the plant. The officials said that the preparations continue without giving details about when the visit is expected to take place./ VOA
