UN with emergency meeting for burning the Koran

The United Nations Human Rights Council will hold an emergency meeting in the coming days to address recent incidents of Koran burning in Europe, a Council spokesman said.

"The UN Human Rights Council will hold an emergency meeting to discuss premeditated acts of religious hatred, as manifested by the desecration of the Holy Koran in several European countries," said spokesman Pascal Sim.

This meeting was called by Pakistan, which submitted the request on behalf of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.

On June 28, an Iraqi man tore several pages and then burned the book of the Koran in front of a mosque in Stockholm, Sweden.

He had received permission for the protest in front of the mosque and the protest coincided with the start of the Kurban Bayram Festival.

Salwan Momika said that he had asked permission from the police to burn the Koran, to "express my opinion about the Koran".

This protest prompted strong reactions from Muslim countries around the world.

This is not the first time that protests have been held in Stockholm in which the burning of the Koran has been allowed. In January, a person burned the Koran in Stockholm, which led to a strong reaction from Turkey.

This incident deepened disagreements between Ankara and Stockholm, as Turkey still has not ratified Sweden's accession to NATO.
