Burning of the Koran/ Iran does not appoint the new ambassador to Sweden

Official Tehran has delayed making a decision on the appointment of a new ambassador to Sweden, after a copy of the Muslim holy book, the Koran, was burned in Stockholm. The news was confirmed on July 2 by Iran's Foreign Minister, Husein Amirabdollahian.

Amirabdollahian added that all the administrative details had already been completed, but it was decided that the new ambassador would not take the post in Stockholm.

On June 28, Tehran summoned Swedish diplomats to express anger over the incident in Stockholm, where two men burned a copy of the Koran near a mosque in the Sodermalm neighborhood on the first day of Eid al-Fitr.

Iraqi authorities said one of the men was an Iraqi national and demanded that Sweden extradite him to face trial in Iraq, where burning the Koran is a criminal offence.

The burning of the Koran on Eid was the first incident of this nature in Stockholm in recent months.

Police in the Swedish capital allowed the demonstration to continue, despite similar actions being banned in February.

Swedish courts had ruled that the police had no right to refuse permission to burn the Koran.

The incident sparked protests in Iran and Iraq.

Diplomatic relations between Iran and Sweden have been strained for some time. A Swedish-Iranian citizen was executed by the Iranian authorities this year./ Rel
