CIA director holds secret meetings in Ukraine

CIA Director William Burns made a secret visit to Ukraine in June. The CIA director met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and intelligence officials to discuss Ukraine's counteroffensive. News of the secret meetings broke on Friday. The secret discussions reportedly took place before Russian mercenary leader Yevgeniy Prigozhin's failed rebellion against Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The Ukrainian counteroffensive against aggressive Russian troops has not brought rapid progress and has not caused panic among senior US military officials.

Ukrainian officials have expressed concern in recent days, calling on Washington and the West to provide Kiev with more advanced weapons to help destroy Russian defensive positions and enable Ukrainian troops to liberate more territory.

However, American officials remain convinced of the results of Ukraine's counteroffensive, even if it will take six to eight weeks./ VOA
