The Council of the EU warns: Consequences for the parties if they fail to reduce

The leaders of the member states of the European Union called on Friday for the immediate extension of the situation in the north of Kosovo, while they warned of consequences in case of failure.

At the end of the two-day meeting in Brussels, the European Council emphasizes that the solution to the problems must be done on the basis of the recommendations of June 3 of the European Union, which include the suspension of police operations, so that the mayors of the municipalities can temporarily perform their duties in the facilities others, the announcement of early elections and the participation of Kosovo Serbs in them.

The European Council emphasizes that the parties must continue the dialogue mediated by the EU, the rapid implementation of the normalization agreement and its implementation. This also includes "the establishment of the Association, or Community, of municipalities with a Serbian majority", the final text says.

Western diplomacy has been trying to find a way out of the crisis in northern Kosovo.

The Prime Minister of Kosovo Albin Kurti presented on Thursday an eight-point plan for the expansion of the situation in the north, making the withdrawal of police forces conditional on the reduction of violence, while for the early elections, he requested the organization of a petition that must be supported by 20 percent of voters. In his plan, Prime Minister Kurti does not mention the issue of the Association.

The European Union has warned that during the week it will announce punitive measures for Kosovo for not taking the steps that have been requested to reduce tensions.

The measures envisage "the suspension of all working groups for the Stabilization and Association Agreement, the suspension of financing of European Union programs, the disapproval of projects from the Investment Fund in the Western Balkans, as well as the suspension of meetings at political levels.

The authorities in Kosovo said today that such measures are unnecessary and convey a dangerous message./ VOA
