France deploys 45,000 police after riots surrounding the murder of a 17-year-old

French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin ordered 45,000 police officers on the streets on Friday after three nights of unrest since an officer fatally shot a teenager in a neighborhood on the outskirts of Paris.

The violence, which was accompanied by the burning of buildings, cars and looting of shops, has plunged President Emmanuel Macron into the worst crisis of his presidency since the 2018 protests by the "Yellow Vest" group.

The unrest has spread across the country, in Marseille, Lyon, Toulouse, Strasbourg, Lille and Paris, where Nahel M., a 17-year-old of Algerian and Moroccan descent, was shot dead in the Nanter district on Tuesday.

His death, which was filmed, has reignited anger in poor urban communities against police for using excessive force and systemic racism.

In the center of the southern city of Marseille, France's second-largest city, protesters ransacked a gun shop on Friday night and stole several hunting rifles but no ammunition, city police said. One person was arrested with a rifle believed to have been stolen from the looted store, police said. The store is now being guarded by the police.

According to authorities, more than 200 police officers were injured, while 875 people were arrested during Thursday evening, while organized protesters in all cities of the country clashed with police forces.

French President Emmanuel Macron left the European Union high-level meeting in Brussels on Friday and returned to Paris to attend the second government meeting on crisis management./ VOA
