Fierce fighting in eastern Ukraine

Ukraine announced today that its forces, during the past week, have liberated a territory of 37 square kilometers in the east and south of the country. Deputy Minister of Defense Hanna Maliar said through a post on the "Telegram" network that in the east of the country, Ukrainian troops have advanced in the city of Bakhmut, while Russia has continued its attacks in the cities of Liman, Advivkas and Marinkas.

She said that fierce fighting is taking place in these areas.

Deputy Minister Maliar announced that Ukrainian military units were carrying out attacks in the areas of Melitopol and Berdunask, in the Zaporizhia region.

Since the beginning of June, Kiev has launched a counteroffensive against Russian troops to liberate the territories occupied by Russia since the start of the aggression in February 2022.

On Monday in The Hague, in the Netherlands, an international center was launched which will focus on the investigation and collection of data on crimes of aggression by Russia against Ukraine.

The International Center for Investigation of the Crime of Aggression will exercise its activity alongside the International Criminal Court (ICC). The latter can investigate war crimes, crimes against humanity, or genocide, but it has no mandate to investigate crimes of aggression, which is defined as the undertaking of a large-scale aggression against a sovereign country, engaging the armed forces.

The US Department of Justice said last month that this international center will play a critical role in the investigation into the shocking crimes committed in Ukraine.

The International Center for Investigation of the Crime of Aggression, among others, is expected to investigate the role of Russian officials during the war in Ukraine.

So far, Moscow has denied committing attacks on civilians, or war crimes./ VOA
