A positive case of West Nile virus in Kosovo

A positive case of West Nile virus was recorded in Kosovo on Wednesday, announced the National Institute of Public Health of Kosovo (IKSHPK).

IKSHPK wrote on Facebook that a 59-year-old man from the municipality of Fushë Kosova was hospitalized at the Infectious Diseases Clinic of KKUK on July 29, due to symptoms such as fatigue and high temperature.

"The patient from 27.06.2024 to 29.06.2024 stayed in Shengjin-Albania, while from 13.07.2024 to 22.07.2024 he stayed for vacation in Ulcinj. "Symptoms appeared immediately after returning from Ulcinj," the announcement states.

The patient is being treated at the Infectious Diseases Clinic of the University Clinical Center of Kosovo, said IKSHPK.

IKSHPK added that the epidemiological situation "is calm and is being monitored with increased caution".

The virus is mainly transmitted by mosquitoes. Mosquitoes become infected when they feed on infected birds and thus spread the virus through their bite.

Among the symptoms of infection are headache, fever, muscle aches and significant fatigue.

West Nile virus causes seasonal illness in the summer months.

Experts suggest that some of the ways to protect yourself from infection are: wearing clothes with long sleeves and light colors, so that you don't go out in open spaces during the period when mosquitoes are most active - at dusk and at dawn - as well as using nets in open areas of houses./ REL
