Macron, appeal to Iran/"Avoid escalation in the Middle East"

The President of France, Emmanuel Macron, on Wednesday called on his Iranian counterpart, Masoud Pezeshkian, "to do everything to avoid a new military escalation" in the Middle East, the French Presidency announced.

"A military escalation would not be in anyone's interest, not even Iran's, and would harm long-term stability in the region," Macron told Pezeshkian during a phone conversation, according to the release.

The French president called to stop the "logic of revenge" and to "protect the civilian population".

Fears about the outbreak of a war between Iran and Israel have increased in recent weeks, after the assassination in Tehran of Ismail Haniyeh, the political leader of Hamas - the radical Palestinian group declared a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union.

Iran and Hamas have blamed Israel for his murder. Haniyehu was in Tehran to attend Pezeshkian's inauguration.

Israel has not claimed responsibility for Haniyeh's murder, but neither has it denied it.

Hezbollah, the Iranian-backed Lebanese militant group, has also threatened to retaliate against Israel after Israeli authorities said they killed one of Hezbollah's commanders in Beirut last week.

"Iran must commit to calling on the destabilizing actors it supports to exercise restraint in order to avoid escalation," Macron said.

Earlier on Wednesday, Pezeshkian called on the United States and other Western countries to stop supporting Israel./ REL
