29 years since Operation 'Storm', Croatia commemorates the end of the

Military parades have been held in Croatia to mark the 29th anniversary of the last major battle of the Croatian War of Independence.

Operation "Storm" in 1995 was a key moment in Croatia's war with Bosnia and led to the recovery of part of the territories from Serbian rebel forces.

The event is commemorated every year and this time it was accompanied by speeches by Croatian leaders, a military parade and a flight of fighter jets recently purchased from France.

Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovi? greeted the anniversary as a celebration of freedom.

"We are gathered here today to celebrate our freedom. To remember the wonderful operation "Storm". Let us remind ourselves of the determination of the Croatian fighters and those who made it possible for us to live in a free and democratic Croatia. Croatian generations dreamed of this moment and today it is our responsibility", Plenkovic said.

But for Serbia, this anniversary is a grim reminder of an event it considers a war crime that led to the mass exodus of Serbs from Croatia.

Every year, thousands of Serbs, including family members of the victims, hold a commemorative ceremony for the anniversary./CNA
