The selection of Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as the vice-presidential candidate by Democrat Kamala Harris means that both parties have already completed the running pairs for the November elections. Ms. Harris and Mr. Walz appeared for the first time on Tuesday evening at a campaign rally together in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, one of the swing states expected to determine the outcome of the election. Vice presidential candidate JD Vance also visited Philadelphia on Tuesday.
Philadelphia is a city steeped in symbolism. It is the city where the founders of the United States declared independence. On Tuesday, both parties campaigned in this very city
Democratic candidate Kamala Harris introduced her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz.
"Tim and I have a message for Trump and others who want to limit our basic freedoms: We will not back down," she said.
Mr. Walz, an Army veteran, former teacher and former high school football coach before entering politics, directly attacked the Republican candidates.
"It's something I've noticed and I have to say it. They are disgusting, they are weird. This is the truth," he said.
Some Democrats say Mr. Walz will win over former Democrats from swing states who voted for Mr. Trump.
"I think this is a demographic that Democrats need to win over. And Tim Walz seems to speak the language of those voters," says Democratic voter Dan Ladise.
Just a few hours earlier---on the other side of town, Republican vice presidential candidate JD Vance held a campaign event, answering questions from the media. He vehemently attacked Mr. Walz.
"Tim Walz has been one of the most radical leftists in all of the United States government at any level," he said.
Mr. Vance hit out at Democrats on immigration, fentanyl and the economy.
Undecided voter Wayne Eastman waited in line for the rally, clutching Mr. Vance's Hillbilly Elegy.
"It's unusual for a politician to also be a writer, so I'm curious," he says.
In 90 days, American voters will choose between former President Trump and Vice President Harris. Ms Harris is calling to avoid a comeback by Mr Trump.
In the coming days, the Democratic duo Harris-Walz will visit five other states that determine the elections: Wisconsin, Michigan, North Carolina, Arizona and Nevada./ VOA
