US Secretary of State Marco Rubio will visit Rome and the Vatican from May 6 to 8. Officials describe it as an effort to repair strained relations with key European partners at a time when the war with Iran is deepening rifts across the Atlantic.
According to a State Department announcement, the trip will serve "to advance bilateral relations."
Rubio will meet with the leadership of the Holy See to discuss the situation in the Middle East and mutual interests in the Western Hemisphere.
"Meetings with Italian counterparts will focus on shared security interests and strategic alignment," spokesman Tommy Pigott said on May 4.
A former senior State Department official, who spoke to Radio Free Europe on condition of anonymity, said the travel time speaks to its importance.
"Secretary Rubio's trip is an important step in diplomacy," he said, adding that the fact that the visit takes place at this time shows how much importance the administration of US President Donald Trump attaches to relations with Italy and the Holy See.
The visit comes at a time of rising tensions between Washington and its European allies, both over the conflict with Iran and broader political disagreements, including trade and military commitments.
War with Iran tests alliances and personal relationships
Analysts say this visit is as much about damage management as it is about diplomacy.
"The war with Iran is putting tremendous pressure on President Trump's relations with European allies," Charles Kupchan, a senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, tells Radio Free Europe.
"Rubio is bringing in fire trucks, in an attempt to put out the flames and limit the damage ," he adds.
Trump has recently clashed with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni - once considered a close ally - as well as Pope Leo, who has been a vocal critic of joint US-Israeli attacks on Iran.
"Trump further escalated tensions by entering into an open confrontation with the Pope, damaging his support from a significant electoral base in the country," says Kupchan.
Trump publicly criticized the Pope in April, calling him “terrible.” The Pope, on the other hand, has continued to condemn the war and broader U.S. policies, including those on migration. Italy, however, has tried to maintain a cautious stance on the conflict in the Middle East.
/REL
