64 Ukrainians and one American are released in a prisoner exchange with Russia

Kiev said on December 14 that it had secured the release of 64 Ukrainian troops and one American citizen in the latest prisoner swap with Moscow.

"There are 64 soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, who fought in Donetsk and Luhansk - especially in the defense of Bakmut - who are returning home. It also became possible to release an American citizen who helped our people - Sweden Murekezi," Andriy Yermak, chief of staff of the president of Ukraine, wrote on social media.

Ukraine and Russia have exchanged large numbers of prisoners of war since it began in February.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in early December that more than 1,300 prisoners have returned to Ukraine since Russian troops began occupying the country.

In a meeting with the Red Cross in October, Russia said it was holding about 6,000 Ukrainian prisoners of war.

The war in Ukraine started on February 24.

President Putin calls the war a "special military operation" to demilitarize Ukraine.

The West has responded to Russia, hitting the economy of this country with harsh sanctions.

As a result of the war, thousands of people have died and millions more have been displaced from their homes./REL
