The heads of state sign the application for Kosovo's membership in the EU

The heads of state of Kosovo have signed the application for membership in the European Union.

The President of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani, described as "historic" the signing of the application for membership in the European bloc.

"We are taking a decisive step towards realizing our collective dream", she said, adding that applying for EU membership is a step towards fulfilling Kosovo's European ambitions.

The submission of the application is expected to take place on December 15 in Prague, Czech Republic, the country that currently leads the European bloc.

Kosovo so far has only one contractual agreement with the EU, namely the Stabilization and Association Agreement.

Of the 27 member states of the bloc, five of them still do not recognize Kosovo's independence. The non-recognizing states are: Spain, Romania, Cyprus, Greece and Slovakia.

From the states of the Western Balkans region, Serbia and Montenegro are the two states that have made the most progress towards membership in the bloc, having so far opened several chapters in the membership talks.

During this year, North Macedonia and Albania started the negotiation process, while Bosnia and Herzegovina received the status of a candidate country this week.

Kosovo is also the only country that does not have visa liberalization with the EU. /CNA.al
