Prime Minister of Greenland: I am ready to talk to Trump
Prime Minister of Greenland Mute Egede

Greenland Prime Minister Mute Egede has reiterated the island's ambition to gain independence from Denmark, stating that the Greenlandic people do not want to be either Danish or American.

Egede made the comments on Friday during a joint press conference with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen in Copenhagen.

Greenland's leader expressed willingness to "talk" with US President-elect Donald Trump, who has repeatedly signaled a desire to buy the world's largest island, claiming Washington's ownership of the Danish foreign territory it was an "absolute necessity" for his national security.

At the same time, Egede reiterated Greenland's push for independence, stating that its people did not want either Copenhagen or Washington to rule over them.

"Greenland is for the Greenlandic people. We don't want to be Danish, we don't want to be American," he said.

"The desire for independence, the desire to be in our home, is probably understood by all the people in the world", Egede emphasized, adding that a vote for independence "will come soon".

The prime minister said he believed Trump's refusal to rule out the use of force to win Greenland was "serious" but promised to continue working with the US in the future.

In recent decades, meanwhile, the island has become increasingly autonomous and was granted self-rule in 1979, eventually gaining the right in 2009 to declare independence if it passes a referendum.
