The number of victims from the fires in Los Angeles reaches 16

The death toll from the fires that have ravaged the city of Los Angeles rose to 16, up from 11 a day earlier.

Fire crews are still battling to put out the blazes as authorities have issued new evacuation warnings, creating even more anxiety among residents.

Representatives of the California Office of Emergency Services said 150,000 people in Los Angeles were under evacuation orders.

Meanwhile, a center has been set up in the area where people can report missing persons.

By Saturday evening, the fires had burned an area of ??100 square miles, an area larger than San Francisco.

To get the situation under control, teams from California and nine other states are working together. They have at their disposal 1,354 fire engines, 84 aircraft and a personnel of more than 14,000 people, including firefighters who have just arrived from Mexico.

"Weather conditions are still critical and strong winds are expected beginning Monday," California Emergency Services officials said.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass is facing a critical test of her leadership role during the city's biggest crisis in decades. Accusations of failure, criticism with a political background and investigations have already started.

On Friday, Gov. Gavin Newsom ordered state officials to investigate why a reservoir holding 440 million gallons of water was out of service.

Los Angeles Fire Chief Kristin Crowley said city leaders failed to help her department by not providing enough money to fight the fire. She also criticized the lack of water.

The level of destruction this time is shocking even for a state that regularly faces mass fires./VOA
