Kremlin: Putin did not threaten to use nuclear weapons

The Kremlin said today that comments President Vladimir Putin made about nuclear weapons during an interview with state media were not a threat to use them, and accused the United States of deliberately taking the comments out of context.

President Putin said in an interview published Wednesday that Russia was technically ready for nuclear war and that if the United States were to send forces to Ukraine, the move would be considered a significant escalation of the conflict.

Commenting on Mr Putin's remarks, White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters that for Washington the Russian leader was restoring Moscow's nuclear weapons doctrine and accused Russia of using irresponsible nuclear rhetoric amid the conflict in Ukraine.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Thursday that Mr. Putin was simply answering the reporter's questions, highlighting the circumstances that are already known in which Russia would theoretically be forced to use nuclear weapons.

Mr. Peskov pointed out the fact that Mr. Putin said during the same interview that the idea of ??using nuclear weapons in Ukraine has not occurred to him.

Asked about the statements of the White House, the spokesman Peskov said that "the comments were deliberately taken out of context. "Mr. Putin did not threaten to use nuclear weapons in Ukraine," he said.

Mr. Putin's statements in the interview published yesterday, come on the eve of the presidential elections in Russia that will be held from March 15 to 17, in which he is expected to win./ VOA
