Blinken-Israeli: Protecting civilians must be your priority

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Wednesday that the safety of Palestinian civilians must be Israel's "priority" in the fight against Hamas in Gaza.

"We are closely following the actions of the government of Israel to ensure that the protection of civilians and the assistance they need is a priority," Mr. Blinken told reporters after a virtual meeting with international counterparts.

"That should be their first job, even as they take the necessary steps to protect the country and deal with the threat posed by Hamas," Mr. Blinken said.

The US top diplomat and ministers from Cyprus, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, European Union countries and the United Nations met via video conference to discuss a maritime corridor for sending aid to Gaza.

"Through this corridor it will be possible to distribute 2 million food meals every day, as well as medicine, water and other critical humanitarian equipment," said Mr. Blinken.

The United States military has sent a ship to the Mediterranean to build a temporary port in Gaza to allow aid to pass through, but has announced that it will take two months to set up the port.

Today, the Gaza Health Ministry said Israeli strikes killed six Palestinians and wounded dozens more as residents of Gaza City gathered to await aid trucks.

Israel denies that it obstructs the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza and blames aid agencies for delays in distribution./ VOA
