The US sees no signs that Russia plans to use nuclear weapons

The White House said late Wednesday that it sees no indication that Moscow is ready to use nuclear weapons in Ukraine, after Russian President Vladimir Putin said he was ready to do so if Russia's sovereignty was threatened.

"We have seen no reason to adjust our nuclear posture, nor have we seen any indication that Russia is preparing to use nuclear weapons in Ukraine," White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre said.

The Russian leader has repeatedly spoken of a readiness to use nuclear weapons since Moscow launched its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Jean-Pierre added that "Russia's nuclear rhetoric" has been "reckless" all along since it launched its invasion of Ukraine.

Speaking in an interview on state television that aired on March 13, Putin described US President Joe Biden as a veteran politician who understands the potential dangers of escalation, and said he did not think the world was heading towards a nuclear war.

At the same time, he said that Russia's nuclear forces are on full alert and that "from a technical-military point of view, we are ready." Putin said that Moscow is ready to use nuclear weapons, in case "the existence of the Russian state, our sovereignty and independence" is threatened.

He also made such a threat during a speech before the nation in February, when he warned the West that deepening its involvement in the war in Ukraine risks inciting a nuclear war./ Rel
