Austria expels two Russian diplomats

Austria has ordered two diplomats from the Russian Embassy in Vienna to leave the country. Austria's Foreign Ministry said in a statement on March 13 that the two diplomats were "involved in actions inconsistent with their diplomatic status" and as a result have been declared "persons undesirable".

She did not provide further details about the diplomats, or their alleged actions. An Austrian official told The Associated Press, on condition of anonymity, that their deportation was related to espionage activities.

The Russian embassy in Vienna said it had not been provided with any evidence supporting their deportation, calling Austria's decision "groundless".

Western countries and Russia have expelled each other's diplomats on several occasions since Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Austria, a member of the European Union that maintains a stance of military neutrality and whose capital is the center of several UN agencies, was initially reluctant to take such action, but has recently expelled more Russian diplomats.

In April 2022, it expelled four Russian diplomats, following public and EU pressure, and four more in February 2023. Before Russia's invasion of Ukraine began, it expelled a Russian diplomat in August 2020. / REL
