Kremlin downplays talks with Zelensky, Trump warns Putin may not make a deal

The Kremlin has downplayed rumors of an imminent summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, while Donald Trump repeated his call for the two leaders to meet to discuss ending the war in Ukraine.

The push for a bilateral meeting comes after the US president met with Putin in Alaska last week and hosted seven European leaders and Zelensky at the White House on Monday.

Trump acknowledged that the conflict was difficult to resolve and acknowledged that it was possible that the Russian president might not be interested in ending the hostilities.

"We will learn about President Putin in the next two weeks," he said Tuesday. "It is possible that he does not want to make a deal."

Putin would face a "difficult situation" if that were the case, Trump added, without offering any details.

Trump suggested that "it would be better" if Putin and Zelensky met without him, in an interview with conservative radio talk show host Mark Levin late Tuesday night.

He added that he would attend a meeting with the two leaders "if necessary," but wanted to "see what happens."/ CNA
