Kallas: In September, with another package of sanctions against Russia

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said today that the bloc will continue to target Russia's "war economy" and that the next package of sanctions should be ready by next month.

Kallas spoke after a virtual meeting of the European Council on the war in Ukraine, a day after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders held an emergency summit with US President Donald Trump in Washington.

She said unity among European leaders at today's summit was tangible and that she had put Ukraine's security and sanctions against Russia at the top of the agenda for talks next week between European foreign and defense ministers.

"Russian President Vladimir Putin cannot be trusted to keep any promises or commitments. Therefore, security guarantees must be strong and reliable enough to prevent Russia from regrouping and attacking again," she wrote in a post on 'X'. /CNA
