Online summit on Ukraine/ Macron: Putin does not want the war to end

The day before, an online summit of leaders of the "coalition of the willing" was held with the participation of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The meeting was held under the chairmanship of French President Emmanuel Macron, and was also attended by the leaders of Italy, the United Kingdom, Germany and other allied countries.

Macron said the group talked for just over two hours and talked about the priorities they plan to discuss during their meeting with US President Donald Trump.

"Our goal is to draw up a joint strategy in view of President Zelensky's visit to Washington, which takes place on Monday," Macron said.

Asked if he believes Russian President Vladimir Putin wants the war in Ukraine to end, Emmanuel Macron replied: “No.” He reiterated that Ukraine needs to have a strong army.

Discussing Monday's meeting with Donald Trump, Macron said the group would challenge the US president on how far he was willing to go in terms of security guarantees for Ukraine. "If we are not strong today, we will pay dearly tomorrow," he said.

Macron went on to warn that showing weakness now risks "paving the way for future conflicts" - pointing to what he calls Russia's previous unwillingness to respect peace agreements.

He added that now is the time to move to a "new diplomatic phase" to resolve the war in Ukraine.

The French president said that Europe's security is closely linked to the current conflict and its leaders must be at the negotiating table to best represent their citizens.

The French president said they wanted to remind Trump "what unites the US, Ukraine and the EU" - citing their shared desire for peace and for Russia to respect "international law and territorial sovereignty".

He says the so-called "coalition of the willing" has reiterated that "we cannot have territorial discussions without the elected representatives of Ukraine."

"Our plan is to present a united front, reiterating who is on the side of peace and international law," he says./ CNA
