Fires in Spain and Portugal/ Evacuations and emergency teams on the ground

Wildfires sweeping across Spain and Portugal have forced evacuations and thousands of emergency workers on the ground, as a heatwave continues to ravage the Iberian Peninsula.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez visited the regions affected by the forest fires in Ourense and León to meet with the heads of the emergency and coordination teams. He was accompanied by Spanish Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska.

In a press conference, Sánchez said that the coming hours and days are critical and that the government will provide the necessary assistance to extinguish the fires, including 500 additional military personnel.

High temperatures in Spain have caused a wave of wildfires that are particularly worrying in Galicia, León and Cáceres. Local media are reporting that up to thirteen active fires are burning in the region.

In neighboring Portugal, more than 3,200 firefighters battled nine major fires on Sunday. Most were centered in the towns of Arganil and Sátão.

Mainland Portugal has been hit by numerous fires since July, particularly in the Northern and Central regions. High temperatures have led to the declaration of a state of alert, which remains in force.

Fires in Portugal have killed at least one person and injured several others. /CNA
