Putin proposes control of eastern Donetsk in exchange for freezing front lines

Vladimir Putin has reportedly made a proposal to Donald Trump that involves Ukraine handing over full control of its eastern Donetsk region, which is 70% occupied by Russia.

According to many newspapers, Putin would agree to the front lines being raised in exchange. Other unspecified concessions were apparently offered. Donald Trump reportedly told Volodymyr Zelensky the offer in a phone call after the Alaska summit.

As unpleasant as it is for Kiev, the issue of territory is a crucial negotiating point in these peace efforts.

It has tried to maintain its stance of not giving up any piece of land to Moscow, which in turn has not backed down from its demand not only for the land it has confiscated, but also for full control of four Ukrainian regions.

It is hard to imagine Zelensky surrendering major cities like Kramatorsk, Kostyantynivka and Sloviansk, after he has successfully defended them for so long. That would also require the approval of Ukraine's parliament./ CNA, translated by BBC
