Terence Stamp, star of the "Superman" films, dies

British actor Terence Stamp, who famously played the villainous General Zod in the films "Superman" and "Superman II," has died at the age of 87.

The Oscar-nominated actor passed away this morning, his family said in a statement. The cause was not disclosed.

Stamp was born in the East End of London in 1938 to Ethel Esther and Thomas Stamp. After enduring the bombing of London during World War II, Stamp left school to work in advertising, before winning a scholarship to drama school.

Stamp began his film career with the 1962 naval film "Billy Budd," for which he earned an Oscar nomination. Stamp's most high-profile role was perhaps as General Zod, the megalomaniacal leader of the Kryptonians, in the 1978 film "Superman" and its 1980 sequel "Superman II." He returned to the world of Superman when he played Jor-El on the television series "Smallville."

He went on to appear in a number of other films, including "Valkyrie" opposite Tom Cruise, "The Adjustment Bureau" with Matt Damon, "Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace" and films directed by Tim Burton.

His last performance was in the 2021 film "Last Night in Soho."

In addition to his career as an actor, Stamp was a prominent writer and author. /CNA
