North Korea tests a new cruise missile

The North Korean leader, Kim Jong Un, has described as a success the test of a new strategic cruise missile, which was launched from a submarine. He said the test is a key moment in building up his country's naval power, North Korean state media reported.

Penian has frequently tested weapons this year, including testing an "underwater nuclear weapons system" and a hypersonic ballistic missile that operates on solid fuels.

State media KCNA said Kim expressed "great satisfaction" over Sunday's test, "which is of great strategic importance to the implementation of our plan... to modernize the military and build a powerful naval force." .

The North Korean leader also inspected a "nuclear submarine" and discussed with officials the construction of new warships, KCNA said on January 29 without giving further details.

According to North Korea, the cruise missile it tested on Sunday flew for about two hours. However, Penian did not say what the distance the missile described was.

Unlike ballistic missiles, the testing of cruise missiles is not prohibited under the current sanctions that the United Nations has imposed on North Korea.

According to North Korea, two Pulhwasal-3-31 missiles were tested during the week. These types of missiles are a new generation of cruise missiles that Peniani said he tested for the first time on Wednesday last week.

Cruise missiles fly at a lower altitude than sophisticated ballistic missiles, making these types of missiles less easily detected.

North Korea's exact sea-launching capability is unclear, but the country has in the past launched missiles from older ships, but not from submarines.
