Iran denies involvement in the attack on American soldiers

Iran has described as "baseless" the claims that it was involved in the attack where three American soldiers were killed in the northeast of Jordan, near the border with Syria.

The spokesman of the Iranian Foreign Ministry, Nasser Kanaani, said that the continuous attacks of the United States in Syria and Iraq, but also the war in Gaza, will only intensify the cycle of instability in the region.

US President Joe Biden blamed Iran-backed groups for the drone attack on US forces.

Kanaani said that "resistance groups" do not take orders from the Islamic Republic.

"These claims are made with certain political goals to subvert the realities in the region," Kanaani was quoted as saying, according to the Iranian news agency, IRNA.

Earlier, Iran's mission to the United Nations issued a statement saying that "Iran has nothing to do with the attack on the US base."

"There is a conflict between US forces and resistance groups in the region, and reciprocally they carry out retaliatory attacks," the Iranian mission said.

The US Central Command said that 34 soldiers were also injured in the attack in Jordan, eight of whom had to be evacuated.

US troops operate at a base near Jordan's border with Iraq and Syria and operate as part of the international coalition against the Islamic State militant group.

It was the first deadly attack on US forces since war broke out between Israel and Hamas - the Palestinian group designated a terrorist organization by the US and the European Union - in October and has since sent shockwaves across the Middle East.

Hamas, which is backed by Iran, launched attacks in southern Israel on October 7, killing nearly 1,200 people, most of them civilians. The Israeli army responded with a military offensive that has so far killed more than 26,000 people in Gaza, most of them women and children, according to the Hamas-led Gaza Ministry of Health./ REL
