British warship repels a Houthi attack

British Defense Secretary Grant Shapps said the UK remains "fearless" after members of Yemen's Houthi rebel movement attempted to attack a British warship in the Red Sea.

"Yesterday [Saturday, January 27] HMS Diamond successfully repelled a drone attack in the Red Sea by the Iranian-backed Houthis," Shapps wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.

He described the continuous attacks on ships by the Houthis as "intolerable and illegal".

"By deploying the Sea Viper missile system, Diamond destroyed the drone that was headed" toward the warship, Shapps said.

No injuries or damage were reported on board the Diamond.

US and British forces on January 12 carried out the first joint strikes aimed at reducing the Houthis' ability to attack ships passing through the key Red Sea route. The rebels have said their attacks on the ships are in support of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, where Israel is fighting Hamas, the Palestinian group designated a terrorist organization by the US and the European Union.

The Houthis began targeting ships in the Red Sea in November last year.

Washington has also carried out unilateral attacks, but the Houthis have vowed to continue their attacks.

The rebels - who are part of Iran's allied alliance against Israel and the West - have disrupted trade in the Red Sea, where about 12 percent of international maritime traffic passes.

Some shipping companies are avoiding the waters of the Black Sea and using longer and more expensive routes around the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa./ REL
