The presidential election and concerns over US support for Israel

Protesters angry at the conflict between Israel and Hamas have flooded the streets of the United States, and some of them are interfering with the appearances of President Biden during his election campaign. VOA White House Correspondent Anita Powell offers a look at how this war is playing out in America's election campaign.

The raging conflict in Gaza has sparked a number of American voters who are straining President Joe Biden's campaign for re-election to the White House.

This rally should have been an abortion rights rally. But much of Mr. Biden's speech on Tuesday was interrupted by protesters angry at the president's support for Israel's military campaign, which visibly upset him.

The protest was organized by the group Die-In for Humanity, which has 700 members and has appeared nearly 100 times at Mr. Biden's events at the Capitol, outside the homes of administration officials, and at this protest that was held in January in Washington.

"We are seeing a change in attitude in the United States that is basically a complete rejection of Biden. We are telling him that he will not have the vote of the Arab-American community while he constantly ignores the voices of the Arab-American community that are calling on him to stop the injustices and crimes in Gaza."

The White House said Wednesday that the President supports peaceful protests:

"He (Biden) also believes that it is very important that Israel has the right and the ability to continue to defend itself against Hamas, which clearly continues to be a serious threat. But that doesn't mean we will stop again urging our Israeli counterparts to minimize civilian casualties and allow aid to flow in."

Political analysts say that Mr. Biden is in a difficult position.

"There is no doubt that the situation in Gaza is a political problem for Biden. If you look at it objectively, Biden has managed this issue skillfully, as much as any president can. He understood from the beginning that by supporting Netanyahu, he would be able to prevent some of the worst things from happening in Gaza. But now he has come so close to him that it is impossible to push him away. And that means the first move, which has alienated many voters — not just Arab-American voters, but also young progressives — could have a more negative impact on him, because if he ousts or marginalizes Bibi Netanyahu, then some of his most powerful supporters, the pro-Israel supporters, may also be unhappy.”

Foreign policy, analysts say, is rarely the deciding issue in an election, but it can make the difference if the race is close. This undecided voter in New Hampshire, who participated in the primary election in this state where Mr. Biden and the Republican candidate Donald Trump won in the party races, said that his decision will be determined by only one thing.

"The main issue for which I will vote in these elections is foreign policy. It's very important to me that we stay out of foreign wars and reduce military spending, bring our forces home and keep them here."

Mr. Trump's plan to resolve the crisis in Gaza is unclear, and his previous actions as president include the much-criticized "ban" on Muslim immigrants. VOA has tried several times to contact Trump campaign officials, but they have not responded.

For Muslim activists, the choice is difficult.

"Mr. Trump did not let our friends and family enter the country. But Mr. Biden killed them. And those four years under a Republican administration do not compare to one day in Gaza, this is the argument that circulates in our communities, that we must sacrifice".

This situation leaves American voters with two tools to express what they feel: their voice and in November, the vote./ VOA
