The military regime installed after a coup in Niger has told a top US diplomat it will kill ousted president Mohamed Bazoum if neighboring countries attempt any military intervention to restore his rule.
One of the officials said the coup plotters told US Undersecretary of State Victoria Nuland about the threat to Bazoum during her visit to the country in recent days. Another US official confirmed this version, speaking on condition of anonymity.
So much so that the US and the UN are concerned about the health and safety of Niger's president-elect, Mohamed Bazoum, who has spent more than two weeks under house arrest.
"We are very concerned about his health and his personal safety and the personal safety of his family," a US State Department spokesman said.
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) had given Niger's coup leaders until Sunday to leave.
