China: Global efforts to reduce tensions over the Strait of Hormuz

China has called for greater international efforts to ease international tensions affecting the global economy amid concerns about Iranian threats to block the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran's parliament approved closing the Strait, a critical bottleneck for global trade, in response to US airstrikes on Iranian nuclear sites, Iranian state media reported on Sunday, although any final decision would have to be made by Iran's Supreme National Security Council and Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Sunday called on China to prevent Iran from closing the Strait, one of the world's most important trade routes for crude oil.

"I encourage the Chinese government in Beijing to call them on this, because they depend heavily on the Strait of Hormuz for their oil," Rubio said in an interview on Fox News./CNA
