German Chancellor: Berlin is resuming talks with Tehran

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said Berlin was "resuming talks with Tehran" in coordination with the United States and European allies.

The German leader said he had urged US President Donald Trump to engage in talks with Iran as soon as possible, while warning against a split in the NATO military alliance amid tensions between Washington and its allies.

"We do not want NATO to be divided. NATO is the guarantor of our security, including and above all in Europe," Merz told reporters.

The German Chancellor also expressed concern that Israel's offensive in Lebanon could jeopardize peace talks.

"We view the situation in southern Lebanon with particular concern. The severity with which Israel is waging war there could cause the failure of the peace process as a whole, and this must not be allowed to happen ," Merz said.

His comments come a day after Trump said allies in the US-led alliance were "tested and failed," indicating what he viewed as insufficient support for the US war with Iran. /CNA
