Israel wants to export gas to Europe through Italy

Israel's prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, said he wants to export gas to Europe through Italy. He told his Italian counterpart, Giorgia Meloni, that there is room for greater cooperation between the two states.

Netanyahu has started his three-day visit to Rome, where he will meet with political and business leaders.

In a brief statement after the meeting with Meloni, Netanyahu did not mention the mass protests being held in Israel over the reforms introduced by his government or the sudden announcement by Saudi Arabia that it has restored diplomatic relations with Iran.

Israel signed an agreement last November with the companies Eni and TotalEnergies, which enables the energy companies to start exploration for natural gas within the framework of the maritime border agreement with Lebanon.

"There is an involvement of Eni in our gas projects, but I think we can transport more," he said, adding that Italian and Israeli ministers will meet in Israel in the coming months for bilateral talks.

Before his visit to Rome, Netanyahu said in an interview with Israeli media that he would ask Meloni to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital. However, this issue was not mentioned in Rome by the Israeli leader, nor by the Italian prime minister./ REL
